The Paul Mescal, Emily Watson and Aisling Franciosi-starring God’s Creatures will open this year’s Dublin International Film Festival (DIFF), which runs from 23 February to 4 March.
God’s Creatures focuses on the secrets and lies in an Irish fishing village and was filmed in Co Donegal. The Saela Davis and Anna Rose Holmer-directed film received its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival last May.
The acclaimed opening film was revealed ahead of the unveiling of the full programme next month, with a number of world premieres also announced as part of an Irish Film Institute season at the festival.
Among the world premieres will be two documentaries, Michael John Whelan’s Fields of Darkness and Cara Holmes’ Notes from Sheepland.
The Future Tense, the new film from directing duo Christine Molloy and Joe Lawlor, will receive its Irish premiere at the festival.
Another highlight will be the Accidental Anthropologist, featuring footage gathered in 1920s Ireland by conservationist Benjamin T Gault and screening at the festival with a live score.
